Description
A high-current superconducting electron linear accelerator is being developed for large-scale production of medical radioisotopes, including 225Ac for targeted alpha therapy. The proposed accelerator employs 1.3-GHz Nb3Sn superconducting radio-frequency cavities operated near 4 K and cooled by conduction without liquid helium. Its design beam energy and average current are 40 MeV and 10 mA, respectively, corresponding to a beam power of 400 kW. The injector consists of an 80-keV gridded thermionic gun, a low-beta three-cell buncher, and booster cavities. The main accelerator uses four cryomodules, each providing approximately 9 MeV. Research and development are focused on Nb₃Sn cavity fabrication, low-thermal-resistance conduction cooling, and a robust 1.3-GHz RF-gated electron source. This paper summarizes the conceptual design and recent component-development results toward a beam-acceleration demonstration at KEK-STF.
