Description

This report presents the development of high-average-power S-band backward-traveling-wave (BTW) linear accelerators for industrial electron irradiation in Tsinghua University. The accelerator adopts a constant-gradient BTW accelerating structure that combines the advantages of traveling-wave and standing-wave configurations, achieving high shunt impedance, low power reflection, and short filling time. The design incorporates a tapered structure with optimized thermal management to handle high-power operation. High-power testing validates electron acceleration to 10 MeV with a peak pulse current exceeding 300 mA, and average output power of 40 kW. This advancement provides a high-performance solution for industrial and medical irradiation applications including food sterilization, medical device disinfection, and material processing.
